TOEFL Reading Passage:

Under the Earth's topsoil, at various levels, sometimes under a layer of rock, there are deposits of clay. Look at cuts where highways have been built to see exposed clay beds; or look at a construction site, where pockets of clay may be exposed. Rivers also reveal clay along their banks, and erosion on a hillside may make clay easily accessible. What is clay made of? The Earth's surface is basically rock, and it is this rock that gradually decomposes into clay. Rain, streams, alternating freezing and thawing, roots of trees and plants forcing their way into cracks, earthquakes, volcanic action, and glaciers — all of these forces slowly break down the Earth's exposed rocky crust into smaller and smaller pieces that eventually become clay.

Rocks are composed of elements and compounds of elements. Feldspar, which is the most abundant mineral on the Earth's surface, is basically made up of the oxides silica and alumina combined with alkalis like potassium and some so-called impurities such as iron. Feldspar is an essential component of granite rocks, and as such it is the basis of clay. When it is wet, clay can be easily shaped to make a variety of useful objects, which can then be fired to varying degrees of hardness and covered with impermeable decorative coatings of glasslike material called glaze. Just as volcanic action, with its intense heat, fuses the elements in certain rocks into a glasslike rock called obsidian, so can we apply heat to earthen materials and change them into a hard, dense material. Different clays need different heat levels to fuse, and some, the low-fire clays, never become nonporous and watertight like highly fired stoneware. Each clay can stand only a certain amount of heat without losing its shape through sagging or melting. Variations of clay composition and the temperatures at which they are fired account for the differences in texture and appearance between a china teacup and an earthenware flowerpot.

3托福巖石主題閱讀練習(xí)

As a TOEFL candidate, mastering the reading section is crucial for achieving your desired score. One of the common themes you may encounter is rocks and geology. Here’s a guide to help you navigate this topic effectively and improve your reading skills. ??

Understanding the Topic

The study of rocks involves various aspects, including their formation, classification, and significance in our environment. Familiarizing yourself with key terms can enhance your comprehension. Here are some essential words to know:

  • Igneous: Rocks formed from cooled magma or lava.
  • Metamorphic: Rocks that have changed due to heat and pressure.
  • Sedimentary: Rocks formed from particles and organic material.
  • Minerals: Naturally occurring substances that make up rocks.
  • Fossils: Remains of ancient organisms found within sedimentary rocks.

Sample Reading Passage

Here’s a brief example of a reading passage you might encounter:

“Rocks are classified into three main types: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. Igneous rocks originate from volcanic activity, while metamorphic rocks are formed through the alteration of existing rocks under extreme conditions. Sedimentary rocks, on the other hand, develop from the accumulation of sediments over time. Understanding these classifications helps geologists to interpret Earth's history.”

Practice Questions

After reading the passage, you might face questions like:

  • What are the three main types of rocks mentioned in the passage?
  • How do metamorphic rocks form?
  • What role do sedimentary rocks play in geological history?

Strategies for Answering Questions

When tackling reading comprehension questions, consider these strategies:

  • Skim the Passage: Quickly read through the text to get a general idea before diving deep. ???♂?
  • Highlight Key Information: Use a highlighter to mark important points or definitions as you read.

Listening Practice

In addition to reading, listening exercises are equally important. Here’s an example of a listening script related to rocks:

“Today, we will explore the fascinating world of rocks. First, let’s discuss igneous rocks. These rocks form when molten material cools and solidifies. Next, we’ll look at metamorphic rocks, which arise from the transformation of existing rocks under heat and pressure. Lastly, sedimentary rocks are created from layers of sediment that compress over time.”

Listening Questions

Following the listening exercise, you might encounter questions such as:

  • What is the primary cause of igneous rock formation?
  • What conditions lead to the formation of metamorphic rocks?
  • Describe the process of sedimentary rock formation.

Tips for Effective Study

To prepare efficiently, consider the following:

  • Read Widely: Explore various materials about geology, including textbooks, articles, and online resources.
  • Practice Regularly: Consistent practice with reading and listening exercises will build your confidence. ??
  • Join Study Groups: Collaborating with peers can provide new insights and enhance understanding.

New Topics to Explore

As you study, you may want to delve into related topics such as:

  • Plate tectonics and its impact on rock formation.
  • The rock cycle and its significance in geology.
  • Famous geological formations around the world.

By focusing on the rocks theme in your TOEFL preparation, you can develop a stronger grasp of the subject and improve your reading comprehension skills. Remember to stay consistent, practice regularly, and approach each reading passage with curiosity. Good luck! ??
