Answer: Since last June (2014-06), my wife and I have been preparing for our journey. Now, after almost seven months on the road, we feel it's time to share some insights.
We left our jobs, sold most of our possessions, and packed our essentials into two large backpacks. We've walked approximately 1000 km in China and 700 km in Vietnam, and our goal is to continue traveling primarily on foot for the next few years.
Note: Although we have covered 1700 km in total, it seems we are progressing slowly. However, our aim is to sustain this journey indefinitely, focusing on endurance.
Preparation
Quitting Jobs
Leaving our jobs was a straightforward decision since we didn't envision a promising future in them. We are still uncertain about what careers we might pursue later, so we opted to follow our instincts and explore possibilities while traveling. We've saved some money but aim to minimize our expenses, targeting a budget of about $8 per person per day.
Getting Rid of Things
As we prepared for life on the move, we decided to keep only the essentials. This meant selling most of our belongings, including our car, furniture, electronics, books, clothes, bedding, kitchenware, and more.
Note: The second step was to let go of what held us back. We sold our car, furniture, electronics, books, clothes, bedding, kitchen items, and everything else.
Selling everything was quite a challenge. We needed at least three months of preparation. We created posters and flyers, distributing them locally, which proved effective. We were pleasantly surprised by the number of inquiries we received daily. By the time we left, everything was sold.
Note: Selling all our belongings was cumbersome, but the flyers worked wonders, and we managed to finalize everything before our departure.
We kept about one-third of our books, some clothing, two laptops, and two boxes of items that hold sentimental value or could be useful during our travels (like hiking gear). These are now stored in my mother-in-law's storage room.
Things We Brought With Us
Big sturdy backpack x 2 + Daypack x 1
Sleeping bag x 2 + Sleeping pad x 2
Double-walled two-person tent x 1
MSR Whisperlite international stove x 1
Cooking pot x 1 + folding cups x 2 + chopsticks x 2 + spoon x 1 + food box x 1
Two bags of clothes (also used as pillows)
iPhones x 2 + GoPro cam x 1 + Sony Rx100 x 1 + USB battery x 2
Washing pack + Toiletries
Umbrella x 2
Big garbage bag (used as a tarp and to bag everything not in use when camping, very useful for keeping things dry and away from rats) x 1 + 10 zipper bags
A bag of emergency supplies: headlight, knife, sewing kit, etc.
In conclusion, embarking on a journey around the world requires careful planning and a willingness to let go of material possessions. For those considering such an adventure, embracing the unknown can lead to personal growth and unforgettable experiences.

Backpacking Travel English Improvement Tips ??
As an IELTS candidate, improving your English skills is crucial, especially if you are planning to travel. Backpacking offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in different cultures while honing your language abilities. Here are some practical tips to enhance your English through backpacking experiences.
1. Engage with Locals ??
One of the best ways to practice English is by interacting with native speakers. While backpacking, take the initiative to converse with locals. Whether it’s asking for directions, ordering food, or simply chatting at a café, these interactions will help you gain confidence and improve your fluency. Remember, most people appreciate when you attempt to speak their language, so don't hesitate!
2. Keep a Travel Journal ??
Writing is an excellent way to reinforce what you've learned. Maintain a travel journal where you can jot down your daily experiences, thoughts, and new vocabulary. This practice not only helps you reflect on your journey but also enhances your writing skills, which is essential for the IELTS exam.
3. Use Language Apps ??
In today’s digital age, utilizing language learning apps can be incredibly beneficial. Apps like Duolingo, Babbel, or Memrise can help you learn new words and phrases on the go. Make it a habit to spend at least 15 minutes a day practicing vocabulary related to travel, food, and culture.
4. Watch English Movies and Series ??
While traveling, you might find downtime in hostels or cafés. Use this time to watch English movies or series. Choose genres that interest you, and pay attention to dialogues, slang, and accents. This exposure will improve your listening skills, making you more prepared for the listening section of the IELTS.
5. Join Group Tours ???♂?
Participating in group tours can be a fun way to meet fellow travelers and practice English. Many tours are guided by locals who share insights about the area. Ask questions during the tour; this not only helps you engage but also allows you to learn new vocabulary related to history and culture.
6. Take Notes of New Vocabulary ??
While backpacking, you will encounter various new words. Carry a small notebook or use your phone to note down unfamiliar terms. Later, look up their meanings and try to use them in sentences. This will expand your vocabulary and prepare you for the writing and speaking sections of the IELTS.
7. Practice Speaking with Fellow Travelers ???
Hostels are great places to meet other backpackers from around the world. Engage in conversations with them in English. Share your travel stories or discuss your plans. This not only improves your speaking skills but also builds your confidence in using the language in real-life situations.
8. Set Language Goals ??
Before embarking on your journey, set specific language goals. For example, aim to learn ten new words each week or have a conversation with a local every day. Having clear objectives will keep you motivated and focused on your language improvement.
9. Participate in Local Activities ??
Many cities offer local activities such as cooking classes, dance lessons, or art workshops. Participating in these events provides an excellent opportunity to practice English in a relaxed environment. Plus, you’ll learn something new and make lasting memories!
10. Reflect on Your Progress ??
After your travels, take some time to reflect on your language journey. Review your journal entries, vocabulary notes, and any recordings of yourself speaking. Assess your progress and identify areas for further improvement. This reflection will not only boost your confidence but also guide your future learning endeavors.
By implementing these tips during your backpacking adventures, you can significantly enhance your English skills while enjoying the thrill of travel. Embrace every opportunity to learn, and remember that every conversation is a step toward achieving your IELTS goals! Good luck! ??
